About the Bluetick Coonhound

The Bluetick Coonhound is a wonderful companion with a rich history, originally bred in the United States for tracking and hunting game. These large, athletic dogs are known for their striking coat marked with mottled blue and black spots, which reflects their strong and enduring personality. Their affectionate nature makes them excellent family pets, especially for homes with young children, and they tend to get along well with other dogs. Although they might take some time to warm up to cats, their friendly temperament generally prevails in a nurturing environment.

With an energy level that keeps them active, Bluetick Coonhounds require regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. Daily walks and playtime are essential to help burn off their zest for adventure and to manage their tendency to bark, which they often do when expressing excitement or alerting their family. Their robust build and love for outdoor activities make them less suited for apartment living unless you can provide ample exercise opportunities.

Grooming is fairly simple with Bluetick Coonhounds, as they typically require weekly brushing to maintain their coat and manage shedding, which is moderate. Trainability is on par with their intelligence, so consistent and firm training methods will yield positive results, especially when coupled with their strong desire to bond with their families. If you’re looking for a dedicated and friendly pet, the Bluetick Coonhound may just be the ideal addition to your home. If you’re interested in welcoming one into your family, consider visiting us at Petland Ashland, Kentucky, where you can discover more about this delightful breed.

Living with a Bluetick Coonhound

History

With its cold nose and drawn out jaw, the Bluetick is a breed that has been traced back to the colonial era. They are said to be the product of mating different coonhounds together. This breed was originally called the English coonhound but this name was subsequently changed in 1946. This breed was finally accepted into the American kennel club in 2009.

Temperament

Bluetick coonhound is first and foremost a hunter. They have a remarkable prey drive and at all times would want to follow a trail. That being said, they do crave attention and could be very loyal and devoted to their owners or anyone else who shows them affection and gives them the attention they crave.

If they are left for a long period of time alone or neglected in any way, they could develop behavioral problems and would be difficult to live with. They could also be loud with their sorrowful howling whenever they are lonely and your neighbors may just have to call animal control.

Environment

This is a really big dog though the females are much smaller so they need a lot of space. They can adapt comfortably to living with people and even in apartments but you would need to give him a lot of room. This breed is also good for first-time owners as they are very sensitive.

It would afford you the opportunity of learning the ropes with your dog. They also love to play with children so you would not have to worry if you have any.

Exercise

There is a reason why it is advised to keep them on a leash in the backyard. They are very active animals and would follow any scent if given the opportunity. This means they need a lot of exercises daily. Though they love being with their owners indoors, it is advised that you give them their due.

If you love to run, they make terrific running buddies but you would need to take care lest they outrun you. You could also have fetch sessions with them in the yard or take long walks with them on a leash. Just make sure they get the appropriate amount of exercise needed.

Grooming

The Bluetick’s coat is relatively short and also sheds quite moderately. They should be bathed occasionally except you do not appreciate their scent or they have gotten themselves messy. Their coats should be brushed weekly to remove all loose hairs that would shed eventually.

Like every other pet, they should be kept clean and this includes dental care and overall body care. Brush their teeth to reduce odor and give them dental treats. You should also clean the ears regularly to avoid infections. Cut their nails too so they don’t scratch when they jump on you.

Our Bluetick Coonhound puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. USDA licensed commercial breeders account for less than 20% of all breeders in the country.

The unregulated breeders who are selling outside of the USDA regulations and without a license are what we consider to be “Puppy Mills.” We are committed to offering Bluetick Coonhound puppies who will grow up to become important members of your family. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Bluetick Coonhound be classified as a good pet?

Can the Bluetick Coonhound be classified as a good pet?

Can you classify Bluetick Coonhounds as aggressive?

The Bluetick Coonhound is very affectionate and loyal but can be particularly difficult to train because they are distracted most of the time. They are not aggressive towards strangers or other people but your guess is as good as ours when they are confronted by cats or smaller animals.

Do Bluetick Coonhounds smell?

Not more than the regular canines but they do have some sort of a musty or houndy smell that some people are not comfortable with. If this is you, then take appropriate care to bathe your dog regularly. If you think the smell is too strong, it may just be proof of something more. So, you may just have to get him checked for underlying skin conditions.

How long can Bluetick Coonhounds live?

Bluetick coonhounds have an average life expectancy of 11 to 12 years.

Do Bluetick Coonhounds like to cuddle?

They are pets in every sense of the word. They are calm and affectionate and gentle too. They are the perfect family dogs and as such, they would love some family time underneath the covers.

What health problems do the Bluetick Coonhounds have?

This breed of canines is susceptible to some diseases like hip dysplasia which could lead to lameness and arthritis if not properly treated or treated on time. They could also have ear infections and bloat if they eat too fast.
